I looked up what Deathstep meant before reviewing this album. Apparently, it’s defined as a “fusion between Death Metal and Dubstep”. Sounds pretty clichéd, right? Well, let’s have a listen and find out…

First of all, the album does not sound to me like the internet definition listed above. Whoops, back to square one… listen with fresh ears and no pre-conceptions then. You know what? That’s how an album should be listened to for fair evaluation of it.

So, the album “Deathstep”. How does it sound? Well, there’s a certain delicious darkness about it which is apparent from the get-go. As far as dubstep influences go (which may cloud judgement of the casual listener) there are flashes of it (notably in the first few seconds of opening track “You Are In A Box” and the general feel of “Lifeforce” when it kicks in) but for the whole this is mostly a Dark industrial album. There are some very interesting tricks used in the album borrowing from industrial, cyberpunk and Rhythmic Noise (the opening bars of “Agony” spring to mind), to name but a few of the genres I’m detecting whilst listening to the album. Last track “The End Of Culture” has a very appropriate name. I’ll leave that up to you to find out why for yourself.

In listening to this album, I can detect influences from bands such as Front Line Assembly, Front 242, Nine Inch Nails, :Wumpscut:, Ultraviolence, Suicide Commando, Ministry, Mindless Self-Indulgence and Leaether Strip to name but a few that come to mind immediately. First Aid 4 Souls (an odd name to be sure, and one that seems to be kind of paradoxical yet oddly fitting) have taken these influences, and mashed them up into something that is entirely their own.

The tracks on the album work together to create a suffocating sense of Paranoia and undiagnosed insanity, like a soundtrack to a lucid nightmare of William Burroughs-esque proportions. If you like your music dark, unsettling, mind-fucking and just that little bit different than the current slew of copycat genre-whores, then this is an album you should definitely check out.

Detrás de First Aid 4 Souls está el músico húngaro István Gazdag.  Este segundo álbum de la banda, que por sus climas tortuosos, sonidas corrosivos y ritmos frenéticos se ubica casi en las antipodos de su antecesor Brutpop, no aporta nada nuevo dentro del género, pero tampoco defrauda a los sequidores más fervientes del electro industrial. Tiene buenos temas como You a in a Box, No More Smile y la demencial The End of Culture, más una cuidada producción. Correcto.

In de tijd dat MySpace nog een gebruiksvriendelijke netwerksite was waar iedere zichzelf respecterende artiest een muziekprofiel had, kon je als muziekliefhebber nog echte ontdekkingen doen. First Aid 4 Souls is zo’n groep die ik dankzij MySpace heb leren kennen en waarvan ik meteen onder de indruk was. Deze electro-/EBM-band uit Hongarije blinkt op meer dan één punt uit in eigenzinnigheid en heeft een stijl die nog het dichtste in de buurt komt van Front 242 in hun „trippy“ periode. Maar laten we vooral niet te veel vergelijken. Dit is een groep wiens muziek u met uw eigen oren moet horen om te begrijpen wat er zo eigenzinnig aan is.

‚Deathstep‘, het 3de album van First Aid 4 Souls, zet deze eigenzinnige trend alvast getrouw voort. Het merendeel van de tracks valt onder de noemer experimentele electro/EBM, maar er is ook ruimte voor een instrumental met klassieke orkestratie (‚Seelenlos (Deathstep Version)‘), alsook voor een nummer in ware power noise-stijl (‚The End Of Culture‘). De grootste troef van deze plaat is evenwel het scala van vocals: maar liefst 6 verschillende personen (onder wie een aantal gastmuzikanten) hebben hun stem geleend aan één of meerdere tracks. Een aanzienlijk deel van de vocals werd aangeleverd door Aaron Russell van Impurfekt, die over de gehele lijn een sterke prestatie neerzet. Vooral ‚House Harkonnen‘ is daardoor op vocaal vlak alleen al een plezier om naar te luisteren. De vocale component van dit album wordt nog eens extra gekruid door het veelvuldige gebruik van stemeffecten zoals vocoder, iets waar ik persoonlijk verzot op ben. Het geeft nummers als ‚No Mercy (Cybertears Mix)‘ een doorgedreven post-apocalyptisch tintje wat wel toepasselijk is voor een plaat die zuiver thematisch beschouwd reeds baadt in een sinistere, desolate sfeer. En sinister is deze CD in elk geval: als de macabere hoes u nog niet heeft overtuigd, moet u vooral eens luisteren naar het tweedelige ‚The Watchman’s Circle‘, waarbij bandlid Istvan Gazdag zijn best heeft gedaan om de luisteraar de daver op het lijf te jagen.

‚Deathstep‘ is niet bepaald het vrolijkste electro-/EBM-album van 2011, maar is juist heerlijk donker op een manier die alleen zwarte zielen kan bekoren. 9/10 voor een buitengewoon gevarieerd en gitzwart elektronisch pareltje dat u absoluut niet mag missen.

In the time when MySpace used to be an user-friendly networking site where every self-respecting artist had a music profile, a music lover could occasionally make some real discoveries. First Aid 4 Souls is one of those bands I got to know thanks to MySpace and that impressed me right away. This electro/EBM band from Hungary excels at more than one point at wilfulness and has a style which comes nearest to Front 242 in their „trippy“ period. But let’s not compare too much. This is a band whose music you should hear with your own ears to understand what’s so wilful about it.

‚Deathstep‚, the 3rd album by First Aid 4 Souls, continues this wilful tendency faithfully. The majority of the tracks can be described as experimental electro/EBM, but there’s also room for an instrumental with classical orchestration (‚Seelenlos (Deathstep Version)‚) as well as for a song in true power noise style (‚The End Of Culture‚). The trump card of this record, however, is the range of vocals: no less than 6 different people (including a number of guest musicians) have lent their voice to one or more tracks. A significant part of the vocals was delivered by Aaron Russell from Impurfekt, who puts up a tremendous performance altogether. Particularly in ‚House Harkonnen‚, the vocals by themselves are a pleasure to listen to. In addition, the vocal component of this album gets seasoned with the abundant use of vocal effects like vocoder, which is something I’m personally fond of. It provides songs like ‚No Mercy (Cybertears Mix)‚ with a persistent post-apocalyptic tone which is apt for a record that – even when you solely consider its theme – bathes in a sinister, desolate atmosphere. And this CD is sinister in any way: if the macabre sleeve hasn’t convinced you yet, you should definitely listen to the two-piece ‚The Watchman’s Circle‚ in which band member Istvan Gazdag has tried his best to scare the hell out of the listener.

‚Deathstep‚ is not exactly the merriest electro/EBM album of 2011; on the contrary, it’s delightfully dark in a way that can only appeal to black souls. 9/10 for an extraordinarily varied and pitch-black electronic gem that is absolutely not to be missed.

Was geschieht, wenn experimentierfreudige Musiker Industrial mit Dubstep und Metal mischen? Es wird zu etwas Neuem, zu „Deathstep“! So lautet auch der Titel des zweiten Albums der Ungarn. Angetrieben von Mastermind István Gazdag, der seit den 90ern mit bekannten Bands auf der Bühne stand, legen FA4S auf ihrem zweiten Longplayer an Härte zu. Dies paaren sie mit sphärischen Klängen und bedrohlich wirkenden Gesängen vieler Gastmusiker. Darunter befinden sich Katalin Helfenbein, Attila Palfavy, Mark Duffield und Aaron Russell, um nur einige zu nennen. Mit ihrem verzerrten Einsatz der Vocals wird die düstere Atmosphäre eindrucksvoll akzentuiert. Ein Soundtrack zum Ende der Welt tischen uns First Aid 4 Souls hier auf. Musik gewiss mit Ecken und Kanten – doch immer gepaart mit dem gewissen Etwas, dass nicht nur kein Titel wie den Anderen klingen lässt -mal sind die Kanten sehr stark ausgeprägt, mal sperrig und dennoch überzeugen FA4S immer wieder durch ihre Einzigartigkeit fernab vom Mainstream der elektronischen Musikszene.

Beginnen wir uns das Werk „Deathstep“ einmal näher anzuhören:
„You are in a box“ führt uns mit sägenden Gitarren und abgrundtiefen Bassfundamenten gleich hinein in die Dystopie, der Beat hämmert los und treibt uns zum Abgrund. Dazu krächzt der Vocoder sein Roboter Lied. Dieser Einstieg in ein Album gefällt. „Among strangers“ setzt speedmäßig einen drauf, klingt dabei fetzig nach alten Zeiten.

Es ist härter, böser, verstörender. „No more smile“ setzt genau an dieser Stelle an und treibt uns zum Limit. Dazu sägen sich die Gitarren in unser Gehör. Diese beiden Titel weisen Qualitäten auf, wie wir sie früher auf Skinny Puppy Aufnahmen so liebten.

Das folgende Stück „Agony“ weist ein wenig viel Ecken auf. Es wirkt sperrig, powert aber mit treibenden Beat und E-Gitarren voran. „The Watchman’s Circle I“ nimmt ein wenig die Härte heraus und lässt den Hörer etwas durchatmen. Ein dennoch klasse, sehr perkussives Stück aus sphärischen Klängen und Rhythmen. „Lifeforce“ kehrt zu alter Härte zurück. Dazu sorgt der eiskalte, verzerrte Gesang für eine Atmosphäre aus Hass und Wahnsinn. „Sekuhara“ erinnert ein wenig an XMH vom Sound, sorgen doch auch hier weibliche, verzerrte Vocals für die Portion Gänsehaut beim Hören. Dazu knallt der dubstep like Rhythmus. „House Harkonnen“ – wer denkt hier nicht an Dune und das böse Haus der Harkonnen. So treibt uns dieser Track mit einem düsteren Sprechgesang durch die Wüste. Die Rhythmen sind heiß und der Sound wie ein Wüstensturm.

Mit „Notes from Underground“ erhalten wir wieder etwas Zeit zum Kräfte sammeln um im zweiten Teil des Stückes wieder loszulegen. Die Hookline fräst sich dabei in unsere Gehörgänge und peitscht auf die Tanzfläche. Dieser Track ist gewiss Clubtauglich! „Wrong call to go“ – wer hat sich hier nur verwählt? Wir wissen es nicht! Der eingängige Track jedenfalls verwöhnt die Ohren durch einen warmen, klassischen Sound. „No Mercy“ in der „Cybertears Version“ spricht die jüngeren Hörer elektronischer Musik an, begeistert aber dennoch mit filigranen Spiel an Reglern und Filtern der Synthies und Vocoder Gesang. „Seelenlos“ in „Deathstep Version“ beginnt vollkommen unerwartet als Stück mit klassischen Instrumenten. Diese werden im Verlauf durch die Elekrtronik unterstützt. Eine hoch interessante Kombination, die FA4S hier hinlegen. „The Watchmen’s circle II“ knüpft als sphärisches Stück an Teil 1 an, der Synth Bass wummert und auch hier sind die musikalischen Ecken vielleicht eine zu viel angesetzt. „Soulscape“ kommt im verstörten Ambient Dubstep Gewand daher – Kickbässe powern, der männliche Gesang unterstützt diesen Sound. Ungewöhnlich – aber interessant.

„The end of culture“ markiert das etwas sperrige Ende des Albums – und auch der menschlichen Kultur. Dissonanz und verstörende Klänge prägen das Bild.
Das Durchhören des Albums „Deathstep“ ist gewiss nicht einfach. Die Musik ist einfach nicht alltäglich, das ist sehr reizvoll. Gewiss sind First Aid 4 Souls kein Musikprojekt zum nebenbei hören. Dafür sind die Stücke zu komplex und auch zu atmosphärisch. Der Reiz würde einfach verloren gehen. Somit sollte jeder selbst entscheiden, ob er sich auf einen Trip ans Ende der Welt einlässt. Lohnen tut er sich in jedem Falle! Fans von Endzeitatmosphäre und nicht-alltäglicher Musik kommen voll und ganz auf ihre Kosten.

Despite forming in the 2nd half of the 00’s, the members of First Aid 4 Souls have had quite the history. You may be familiar with Vacuum from the early 90s, a significant name in Hungarian industrial. For all intents and purposes, First Aid 4 Souls is the successor to Vacuum. Emerging onto the scene in 2009 with the ‚Brutpop‚ album, FA4S return in 2011 with their sophomore effort ‚Deathstep‚, a concept album about how ‚Western civilization is marching step by step, from day to day closer to apocalypse‘.

Robotic vocals meet trance leads greet me in the pounding opener ‚You Are In A Box‚. During the album’s 78 (!) minute duration, we meet many different elements of contemporary electronic and industrial music from the classic EBM inspired ‚Among Strangers‚ to the punchy & energetic industrial rock of ‚Agony‚. Other tracks like ‚Sekuhara‚ introduce subtle hints of house music. This house influence also creeps into ‚Watchmans Circle I‚, a track that also contains some very nice tribal sounds. We also get more traditional industrial tracks like the Skinny Puppy-ish ‚Lifeforce‚ and ‚House Harkonnen‚, a track that did nothing for me when it began but builds up to be one of my standouts from the album. Actually, the trio of ‚House Harkonnen‘, ‚Notes From Underground‘ and ‚Wrong Call To God‘ is where this album really shines and First Aid 4 Souls‚ potential is fully realized.

As they did with ‚Brutpop‚, ‚Deathstep‚ introduces several guest vocalists. Here we can find members of Impurfekt, KIFOTH and I Am One lending their voice to multiple tracks. I am particularly impressed with the dreamier tracks featuring Mark of I Am One. The strongest of these is the previously mentioned ‚Wrong Call To God‚ evoking similar spacey soundscapes and images as the legendary Mind.In.A.Box.

As a whole, I feel that First Aid 4 Souls need to further define their sound. ‚Deathstep‘ could be too schizophrenic for the pickier listener. An enjoyable listen nonetheless!

The second full-length release from Hungary’s First Aid 4 Souls sees them taking a step towards a faster, darker sound. Released on Germany’s Electro Arc label, Deathstep is full of pounding synth lines and distorted vocals, taking industrial and EBM into new territory by twisting the sound with techno, trance and Neue Deutsche Härte. It shouldn’t really work but it does so gloriously: First Aid 4 Souls have mined the world’s electro-nightmares and come up with an unforgettable album. Highly recommended!

I have always liked the work of ‚First Aid 4 Souls‚ and this latest release is even better than their last release Brutpop – read more about the label they are on here.

Atmospherical sounds with elements of ethno-rythm, classical strings and samples from computer games and SciFi-Effects – Deathstep is more than your average EBM beat blitzkrieg, it is almost subtle in places (?) and as their label’s press release states; there are a lot of creative juices from America, England, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Japan mixed together on this thumping gem.

Die aus Ungarn stammende Formation First Aid 4 Souls sind in ihrer Heimat keine Unbekannten mehr und István Gazdag war schon in den frühen 90er mit Bands wie Clock DVA oder Swamp Terrorists mit auf der Bühne. Erst im Jahre 2006 gründete er dann mit dem Schlagzeuger István Drimál zusammen das Projekt.
Aushänge Schild für das Projekt ist unter anderem, dass hier sehr viele Stimmen zum Einsatz kommen. Neben den festen Gesangsstimmen von Katalin Helfenbein und Attila Palfalvyst, bringen sich hier als Gaststimme Madalina Kertesz, Linda Daemon (Drugzone), Mark Duffield (I Am One) und Aaron Russell (Impurfekt) ein. Die Gesangsstimmen werden meist in verschiedenen Variationen verzerrt, nur selten gewinnt man den Eindruck das die Stimme unverfälscht geblieben ist.

Das Album „Deathstep“ stellt die Zeiger auf 5 vor 12 und die Texte zeigen in dem Konzeptalbum auf, wie die Menschheit sich auf den Abgrund zu bewegt und soll den werten Hörer aus seiner Lethargie reißen. Als Einfluss geben sie Kafka, Dostojewski oder auch Lovecraft an. Kreative und intelligente Texte werden bei „Deathstep“ mit Samples gut unterstrichen und ausgebaut.

Die Industrial-Elektro-Formation First Aid 4 Souls versteht es zu dem mehrere Stile gekonnt zu verbinden, so dass man am Ende, trotz diverser Stile, ein durchweg tanzbares Endprodukt erhält. Elektronische Rhythmen verbinden sich mit verspielten trance-artigen Sounds, wie auch mit klassischen Arrangements bis hin mit dröhnenden Gitarren. Ein intelligentes Songwriting trägt dabei zu, dass die Masse an Elementen gut platziert zum Einsatz kommt und somit nie fehl am Platz wirkt. Es ist jedoch noch weitaus mehr zu finden, Samples aus Computerspielen und Sci-Fi Filmen, wie auch atmosphärischen Arrangements runden das Soundgewand von First Aid 4 Souls ab und machen es so sehr vielschichtig.

Fazit :Das multikulturelle Projekt erschafft aggressiven, tanzbaren und atmospärischen Industrial-Elektro, welcher sich in den Gehörgängen festsetzt und den Drang zur Bewegung freisetzt.
