Elektronische Musik mit Seele war das Ziel, das derdamalige VACUUM-Musiker István Gazdag vor Augen hatte. Ursprünglich in der Industrial-Szene Ungarns verwurzelt, überrascht der gute Mann zusammen mit zahlreichen Mitmusikern mit einer Scheibe, die das anvisierte Ziel nicht nur erreicht, sondern locker über dieses Ziel hinaus schießt.
Zwar ist der Grundpfeiler so gut wie immer eine technoide Legierung aus EBM, Industrial, Electro und Psytrance, doch viele experimentelle Ausläufer gen Rock, Goa, Folk, Wave, Soul und Pop lassen das über einstündige, hypnotische Werk zu einer faszinierenden Entdeckungsreise werden, auf der man selbst nach mehreren Durchläufen noch immer Neues entdeckt. Keines der dreizehn Stücke ähnelt dem anderen, und die intelligente, kreative, detailreiche und verspielte Musik wird von zahlreichen, sehr unterschiedlichen Stimmen mehr als gekonnt veredelt – und ja, dieses Album hat Seele ohne Ende. Mehr Seele als so mancher „handgemachter“ Tonträger.
„Brutpop“ ist ein schlagkräftiges Argument gegen die Vorurteile gegenüber elektronischer Musik – doch es darf bezweifelt werden, dass diese ganzen verbohrten Leute ihre Ignoranz ablegen. Lassen wir also diese Menschen mal in ihrem Irrglauben und genießen derweil FIRST AID 4 SOULS‘ mutige, brillante Tonkunst ohne diese Starrköpfe. Selbst schuld! (Chris)

Wie bei vielen anderen Bands, so reicht das musikalische Wissen der Band mit dem etwas sperrigen Titel First Aid 4 Souls weit zurück. Der aus Ungarn stammende István Gazdag firmierte bereits 1992 unter dem Namen Vacuum und konnte unter anderem zusammen mit den damaligen Größen Clock DVA oder auch X-Marks The Pedwalk zusammen die Bühne teilen. 2006 nun scharrte dieser wieder Musiker und Sängerinnen zusammen, und als First Aid 4 Souls konnte er zumindest in seinem Heimatland schon für einige positive Resonanzen sorgen. Das mag vielleicht auch daran liegen, dass die Band sich nicht so richtig greifen lässt und dadurch auch einen gewissen Reiz enthält. Zum einen treffen melodische Synthielinien auf treibende Beats, während sich der Gesang jedes Mal ändert. Mal Heavenly Voices („Before The Light“) mal mit verzerrter Stimme („Painkiller“) und manchmal, und in diesen Momenten sind sie am stärksten, mit der weiblichen Rockröhre Linda Daemon, die wie beispielsweise auf „Powa“ so richtig Gas gibt. „Brutpop“ könnte daher schon stimmen, denn eingängig sind die Stücke ja, allerdings auch immer mit genügend Ecken und Kanten versetzt, dass man sich nicht leicht tut, der ganzen CD zu folgen. Es fehlen zum Teil die markanten Refrains, die eingängigen Sounds. Irgendwie fließt das Album so vor sich hin. Und am Ende muss man sich noch einmal hinsetzen, und das ganze noch einmal durchhören. Spricht einerseits für die Band, die durchaus etwas von Musik versteht – so wechselt „The Unborn Child“ mit seinen ruhigen Trance-Linien zu „Wings Of Morpheus“ mit aggressiven Gitarren und einem Hackenden Beat. Am Ende scheinen First Aid 4 Souls ein bisschen zuviel zu wollen. Alles sprudelt aus ihren Köpfen raus und will auch in die Tracks. Beim nächsten Mal etwas mehr Struktur und auch Mut zur Reduktion.

Erste Hilfe für Seelen versprechen First Aid 4 Soul aus Ungarn. Nicht unbedingt Newcomer zu nennen, obwohl die Band an sich noch nicht ganz so lange aktiv ist. Das Underground Label Electro Arc nahm diese unter seine Fittiche, da man dort vom Potential überzeugt ist und den Stilmix der Band anpreist. So auch bei uns im allgemeinen Forum. Frage ist nun, sind die versprochenen Stile wirklich vorhanden und auch effektiv im Sound der Osteuropäer verarbeitet worden ? Genau das und auch die nicht ganz nebensächliche Frage „Macht die Musik denn Spaß?“ wird im folgenden Text angesprochen.
Nunja, so eng sollte man das alles nicht sehen. Wen interesiert schon wirklich ob da nun „true“ Powerelectronics oder der „wirkliche“ Industrial zum Einsatz kommt ? Viel wichtiger ist doch, dass die Kompositionen mitreissen, der Gesangespart zur Musik passt (was in meinen Ohren oft ein Manko im elektronischen Bereich ist!) und dass die Scheibe nicht totlangweilig ist. Letzteres kann verneint werden, denn hier bediente man sich tatsächlich an recht vielen Zutaten. Electro, Techno, EBM, Trance, Ambient…und ja auch Pop. True Industrial Freaks wird das kaum ansprechen – womit auch die Eingangsfrage und die Forenkontroverse beantwortet wäre. Einerseits sind auf „Brutpop“ überwiegend eher recht eingängige Stücke zu finden, die noch dazu oft von (fähigen) Gastsängerinnen begleitet werden. Andererseits ist aber auch EBM/Electro zu hören, der ein wenig an die amerikanische Schule ala Mentallo & The Fixer (wenn auch lange nicht so komplex), sowie Velvet Acid Christ aus der Mittelphase errinnert. Keine schlechten Referenzen fürwahr. Insbesondere der männliche Part am Micro errinnert hier an oben genannte und ähnliche Bands, wenn er denn Effekte nutzt. Einzelne Track herauszugreifen und einzeln zu besprechen würde den Rahmen sprengen, aber schon beim ersten Hören fand ich mindestens 4-5 Lieder, welche als obligatorische Anspieltipps dienen könnten. Hier sei grade nochmal auf die Vielfalt im Vocal Bereich hingewiesen, bei „The Unborn Child“ vermeint man z.B. 242 Jean-Luc De Meyer zu hören, während bei „Robochan“ eine Geisha durch den Vocoder gejagt wurde…
Selten hört man im Electro Bereich ein Album, das so viele unterschiedliche Stile vereinte. Wer dann noch dem doch erheblichen Techno, Trance und teils sogar leichtem Goa Einschlag nicht abgeneigt ist, wird seine wahre Freude an dem Album haben. So wie ich.

According to the band’s statement, the musicians focus on mixing several stylistic devices. Indeed, it’s hard to pigeonhole the soundscape as you will find a lot of influences providing so many features that refer to different music genres. Thus, `Brutpop´ turns out to be a colourful and varied album which is addressed to open-minded listeners who enjoy smartly arranged, experimental melodies and traditional club stuff alike.
For example, `Before the Light´ firstly appears as a typical up-tempo electro track with pulsating beats and synth effects. As soon as the soulful female vocals resound, the song gains liveliness and warmth making forget that this is a piece from the pen of an electro / industrial band. The second song `First Aid´ is an orchestral piano-driven opus with bombastic classical sounds, fragile female vocals and tender strings. Contrary to that, `Hairy-(ass)ed´ is striking due to the distorted and somehow weird vocals that are accompanied by pumping electro rhythms following the tradition of old school material. Connected to modern club sounds, the clear male vibrato vocals on `Crime and Punishment´ radiate a feeling of big city action and elegant understatement. Finally, the trance-like `The Wave´ comes up with playful crystal clear keys and is the innovative conclusion of a demanding album daringly juggling with pretty different styles.
On the one hand, I particularly enjoyed those tracks sung by the female band members; on the other hand, I was kind of overstrained after listening to the all in all 13 tracks due to the recording’s prominently multi-layered soundscape. Therefore, `Brutpop´ isn’t easy listening stuff and might primarily attract listeners who are pleased by avant-garde and sophisticated electronic music.

First Aid 4 Souls – Die geistreiche Seele des Electro
In ihrer Heimat Ungarn sind FA4S schon längst keine Unbekannten mehr. Die Band hat ihre Wurzeln in der Industrial Szene, als Vacuum standen István Gazdag und István Drimál schon 1992 mit namhaften Vertretern des Genre wie Clock Dva, Swamp Terrorists oder X-Marks The Pedwalk zusammen auf der Bühne.
2006 gründete Mastermind István Gazdag (lead synths, Gesang) zusammen mit dem Schlagzeuger István Drimál das neue Projekt First Aid 4 Souls. Kein Name könnte treffender sein, denn die Musik der Ungarn hat etwas, was den meisten Electrobands bisher fehlte: Seele.
Seele in der Stimme, sowohl von Eszter Ágoston als auch von Katalin Helfenbein, die sonst für die e-drums schlagkräftig zuständig ist. Besonders hervorzuheben ist der erotische, ja soulige Gesang von Linda Daemon. Mit Zoltan Havasi am rhythm synth und Attila Palfalvy dem aktuellen Schlagzeuger wird die Band komplettiert.
FA4S verbinden in ihrer einzigartigen Musik die tanzbaren Rhythmen des Electro, mit filigranen, manchmal klassischen anmutenden Arrangements, psychedelische, trance-artige Soundspielereien und eben dem ganz großen Gefühl. Dass das Ganze dabei aber nie in den puren Kitsch abrutscht, dafür sorgt das intelligente Gesamtkonzept hinter der Musik. Mit geistreichen Texten, die philosophische Elemente, inspiriert durch u. a. Jeff Noon, aufgreifen und dem konzeptionellen Artwork des Malers Norbert Szük kreiert die Band ein einzigartiges Gesamtkunstwerk. Irgendwo in der knallharten Wirklichkeit der modernen Industriegesellschaft finden sie Elemente voller Fantasie, Erotik und Intelligenz, die nie Realitätsflucht sind.
FA4S zeigen, dass die Kreativität moderner, elektronischer Musik noch lange nicht erschöpft ist und befriedigen das Tanzbein genauso wie den Kopf und das Herz.
